WordPress Programmer — Role, Skills & Costs [2026]

A WordPress programmer should know PHP 8.x, MySQL, hooks, the REST API, custom post types and WooCommerce. Typical commissions: custom plugins (1,500–5,000 PLN net), theme modifications (800–2,500 PLN), API integrations (3,000–12,000 PLN), optimisation (1,500–5,000 PLN). When you need a programmer and when care is enough — in this guide.

A WordPress programmer is a profession with many faces: one person "assembles sites" from ready themes and plugins, another writes dedicated extensions, integrations and optimises performance at a production level. Before you hire or commission work, it is worth knowing what you actually need — and what the programmer you entrust your site to should know. The Polish job market offers WordPress developers 10,500–14,000 PLN per month full-time; freelancers work at 60–150 PLN net/h, and simple tasks are also commissioned hourly from around 100 PLN. This guide covers competences, scope of work and collaboration models.

Najważniejsze: A WordPress programmer should know: PHP 8.x and MySQL, hooks and the REST API, custom post types and ACF fields, JavaScript (Gutenberg blocks), WooCommerce, plus security and performance basics. Typical commissions: custom plugins (1,500–5,000 PLN net), theme modifications (800–2,500 PLN), API integrations (3,000–12,000 PLN), optimisation (1,500–5,000 PLN). Commissioning makes sense when you need a feature, an integration or a fix — not just a content change.

What should a WordPress programmer know?

Competences come in three tiers — and it is worth knowing which one you are looking for.

Tier 1 — administrator/site keeper

  • panel, content, plugins and updates,
  • form, SEO and backup configuration,
  • diagnosing simple problems.

Tier 2 — developer

  • PHP 8.x, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS,
  • hooks (actions/filters), custom post types, ACF, taxonomies,
  • child themes and theme modifications,
  • WooCommerce (store, payments, shipping),
  • REST API and integrations (CRM, mailing, external systems).

Tier 3 — senior/integrator

  • production-grade custom plugins (tests, versioning),

  • performance and Core Web Vitals under heavy traffic,

  • - security: audits, hardening, incident response,

  • - architecture: when WordPress stops being enough and a dedicated app is needed.

When talking to a vendor, ask about concrete experience at your tier — not about "WordPress knowledge" in general.

What do you commission from a WordPress programmer?

Commission Typical cost (net) Notes
Theme / layout modification 800–2,500 PLN Child theme, sections, styles
Custom plugin (simple scope) 1,500–5,000 PLN Calculators, fields, logic
API integration (CRM, ERP, payments) 3,000–12,000 PLN Webhooks, synchronisations
Performance optimisation 1,500–5,000 PLN Cache, images, database, hosting
Site/hosting migration 800–3,000 PLN Preserving SEO (redirects)
Malware removal and hardening from 400 PLN WordPress malware removal

The more often the same problem repeats (manual reports, exports, orders from several channels), the faster a dedicated plugin pays back in saved hours.

When a programmer, and when is care enough?

  • A programmer — when you need a new feature, integration, rebuild, optimisation or a fix that an update cannot solve.
  • Administration — for ongoing service: updates, backups, content, monitoring (WordPress administration).
  • Care — when you want both areas in one package with an SLA (WordPress website care).

Many companies combine the models: ongoing care day to day plus project commissions when a new need appears.

How to assess competences — technical questions

  • - Hooks: "Will you make the modification in a child theme via filters, or with an override?" — the answer shows the craft.
  • - Performance: "What will you do when the site loads in 6 s with 50 plugins?" — a diagnosis, not a list of "speed-up plugins".
  • - Security: "How do you harden a site and what do you do after an infection?" — a procedure, not "Wordfence is enough".
  • - Code: "Will the code land in my repository and who holds the copyright?" — the only right answers: yes and the client.
  • - Process: "What do the stages and demos look like?" — staging, stage demos, milestone payments.

Vendor selection criteria are also covered in WordPress developer — the two texts complement each other.

How much does a WordPress programmer cost?

  • - Full-time: 10,500–14,000 PLN per month (mid), higher for full-stack (16,000–27,000 PLN).
  • - Freelancer: 60–150 PLN net/h; simple work from around 100 PLN/h.
  • - Agency: 100–200 PLN/h with process and support.
  • - Hourly care model: from 300 PLN/month + work at rate.

Always ask for a staged quote with acceptance criteria — it protects both sides from an "endless project".

Frequently asked questions

Is a WordPress programmer the same as a WordPress developer?

In practice yes — the names describe the same role. "Developer" appears more often in job ads and international contexts, "programmer" in the Polish commissioning market. Check the scope and portfolio, not the label.

Should I commission a custom plugin instead of buying a ready one?

When the process is unusual, a ready plugin forces a change in how you work, or the subscription costs more than one-off development — a custom plugin wins. It is also yours: with code rights and no dependency on someone else's roadmap.

How long does it take to write a WordPress plugin?

A simple one (fields, a section, logic) — 1–2 weeks. With an API integration — 3–6 weeks, depending on the documentation of the system on the other side. Always start with a short specification so the scope is countable.

How do I check whether a programmer is faking it?

  • Ask two questions: about hooks and about child themes. Someone who really programs answers concretely. Also ask for a code sample from a real project or a repository — "clicking in Elementor" shows immediately.

Can a WordPress programmer also handle SEO?

Partly — technical SEO (structure, performance, structured data, Core Web Vitals) is a natural part of the job. Content strategy and link building are separate competences; combining them in one person is often a promise without delivery.

What if the site breaks after an update the programmer made?

The contract should provide post-launch support and rollback (backups, staging). If the vendor "does not respond after launch" — that is not support, just a one-off commission. On the models see WordPress website care.
